Picasso became the most expensive board in history – Swedish Radio

On Monday evening was a painting by Pablo Picasso for $ 179.4 million – about 1.5 billion – at Christie’s in New York. It thus became the most expensive work of art at auction so far.

“Les Femmes d’Alger (version O)” as the painting called belongs to a series from the mid 1950 Picasso made based on a painting of the same title by Eugene Delacroix from 1834, and representing women in a harem.

Picasso Painting considered among the most significant works from the latter half of the artist’s career are still in private hands, hence the high price. A triptych by Francis Bacon held the previous record ($ 142.4 million).

At Monday’s auction was also set new world record for a sculpture, as Alberto Giacometti’s “L’homme au doigt” was sold for 141.3 million dollars.

Even in Sweden held auctions for contemporary art in the week, but here are the totals considerably more modest. Almost 40% of the works remained unsold at Stockholms Auktionsverk Contemporary yesterday, including a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat with the auction’s highest exclamation of 3-4 million.
