Tomas Tranströmer is dead – Aftonbladet

The Nobel Prize-winning poet Tomas Tranströmer has died after a short illness.

He was 83 years old.

– I can confirm that, He died yesterday, says Anna To Branch, Press Manager at Albert Bonnier, Aftonbladet.

Tomas Tranströmer was born in 1931 and grew up in Stockholm. In 1954 he made his debut with the poetry collection “17 Poems”.

He was trained psychologist and worked for a period as a counselor at a school for juvenile offenders. In 1980 he was employed as a psychologist at the Labour Institute in Västerås. Ten years later he suffered a stroke that robbed him of speech. He continued to write poetry long after the stroke – his last collection of poems “The Great Mystery” was published in 2004.

According to a press release from Albert Bonnier died Tomas Tranströmer yesterday after a short illness. Chief mourners is the wife Monica and their two daughters.

– He is a classic of Swedish literature. It is a dear friend and a great poet who has been lost, says Academician Kjell Espmark to Aftonbladet TV.



Awarded the Nobel Prize in 2011

2011 was awarded Tranströmer Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy’s citation read:

“To his condensed, translucent images, he gives us fresh access to reality.”

The announcement was met with acclaim worldwide. Tranströmer was translated into more than 50 languages.

– He is very big in China, he is great in the US, he is great everywhere. He is good simply, told Aftonbladet’s cultural section Åsa Linderborg in connection with the announcement.

In February tactics Louisiana Channel into a short film at the home of Tomas Tranströmer. It was to be his last appearance.
